When Mrs. Mitchell's father's estate was divided, she received as her inheritance a tract of land two miles west of Savage. Here the family lived for many years in a five room frame home. A baby daughter was born Mar. 29, 1919 to the Mitchells named Frances Marie Mitchell, a baby son named Charles M. "Chuck" Mitchell was born Nov. 6, 1923. The original home stood until it was destroyed by a tornado in 1957.

Other than farming, the family took part in community affairs at Emma, and later in Ralls. Mrs. Mitchell was an inspiration in the community with her oil paintings and in later years in china painting. She and her husband loved nature and the soil and enjoyed a close-knit family life until his tragic death Jan. 19, 1937.
