Pearl McWhorter

Funeral rites for Mrs. Pearl McWhorter, 84, were held Tuesday in Sanders Memorial Chapel in Lubbock. Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery.

Mrs. McWhorter died about 2:23 a.m. Monday in a Lubbock hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McWhorter was born in Honey Grove and moved by covered wagon with her parents, the Gunns, to Quanah and then to Dickens. She was married to Zay Powell, one of the owners of the old Half Circle S Ranch in Crosby County. After Powell's death she married B. O. McWhorter, widely known Plains rancher who preceded her in death.

The McWhorter Elementary School in Lubbock was named after the McWhorters.

She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Lubbock.

The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Zay Powell Keeton of Lubbock; a son, Hudson Powell of Arlington, VA; and four grandchildren.
