
William "Bill" Ed McLaughlin, widely known in Lubbock business and banking circles, was found dead in his farmhouse near Ralls late Thursday afternoon.McLaughlin, 58, whose Lubbock home was at 4506 14th St., was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at 4:40 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Jim Scott Travis of Ralls. Travis withheld an official ruling pending autopsy results.
McLaughlin, who with four other Lubbock men purchased Texas Bank in 1974, was a member of a pioneer West Texas banking family. He was the first president of Texas Bank, resigning in 1977, and was associated with Lubbock National Bank for 26 years.
He had served as a member of the LNB board of directors and as a vice president. At the time of his death he was operating the bank in Ralls.
In 1971 then-Gov. Preston Smith named McLaughlin to the Texas Finance Commission. Noted as a civic leader, he was the first president of Southwest Lubbock Rotary Club.
He also was a former member of the Texas Consumer Credit Section.
McLaughlin reportedly was found in his farm home by a family member concerned about his welfare. Friends said he had worked at the Ralls bank earlier in the day.
Services for McLaughlin are pending with Rix Funeral Directors.

Funeral services for Bill Ed McLaughlin 58, a pioneer Crosby County and South Plains resident were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Methodist Church in Lubbock, with the Rev. Todd Dotts, pastor officiating.McLaughlin died about 4:30 Thursday at his farm near Ralls.
Burial was in the Ralls Cemetery by the Rix Funeral Home.
McLaughlin was a director and major stock holder at the Security State Bank and Trust Company in Ralls. He suffered a heart attack at the bank about a year ago but had partially recovered and was working almost daily at the bank.
The Ralls native was a member of a pioneer West Texas farming and banking family; his grandfather founded Security State Bank in Ralls in 1912. McLaughlin graduated from Amarillo High School and Southern Methodist University and married Kathryn Loving June 2, 1947 in Amarillo. They moved from Dallas to Lubbock in 1948.
He was associated with Lubbock National Bank for 26 years, serving as a director and executive vice president. McLaughlin and four other Lubbock men purchased Texas Bank in 1974, and he served as its second president until resigning in 1977.
McLaughlin also was vice president of West Texas Turf Inc. and vice president-treasure of Stryco Sales Inc.
Former Gov. Preston Smith appointed McLaughlin to the Texas Finance Commission in 1971. He also was a former member of the Texas Consumer Credit Section.
The civic leader was the first president of the Southwest Lubbock Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the Boards of Methodist Hospital, the Red Raider Club and the musical "Texas" in Canyon. He was a member of the South Plains Shriner Club and St. John's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Ike (Trisha) Thomas of Granbury and Mrs. Bill (Karyn) Frist of Boston; a sister, Mrs. Roy Stryker of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Frank Jr. of Jefferson and two grandsons.
