Frances Lyle Memorial services for Frances Urban Lyle, 88, of Lubbock were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 1997, at Neil Chapel at Carillon in Lubbock with the Rev. Keith Wiseman, associate pastor of the Lubbock First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, in the Ralls Cemetery with the same officiant under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.

Mrs. Lyle died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, in the Carillon Care Center in Lubbock following an illness.

She was born July 6, 1909, in Stewartsville, MO, and married Thomas G. Lyle on Oct. 9, 1954, in Cameron, MO. Mrs. Lyle graduated from Cameron High School and taught in rural schools before earning her B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Missouri and a Master of Science from Iowa State University. She pursued a career in home economics, teaching high school and adult education, then teaching at Iowa State Universtiy, Texas Tech University and Ohio State University. She served six years as Field Secretary for the American Home Economics Association.

After marriage she cared for foster children and then was employed by Lubbock County Child Welfare. In 1996 she became the first training officer for the Texas Region of Operation Head Start. After retirement in 1972 she and her husband Tommy traveled throughout the world. She moved from Ralls to Carillon in Lubbock in 1977. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, the Fifty-fifty Sunday School Class and a leader of the Lydia Circle UMW. She was a member of the Lubbock Dollers Doll Club and was involved in china painting, sculpting, and making porcelain dolls. She was a life member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron. She was active in home economics alumni concerns at Texas Tech where a scholarship is endowed in her honor.

Survivors include her husband, Tommy Lyle of Lubbock; two daughters, Betsy Hanson of Windsor, Ontario, and Sheila Williams of Austin; five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 6 nieces and nephews.

As an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, to the Frances and Tommy Lyle Scholarship or to Carillon.
