The skies of Texas are brighter as Winnie Jones joined the celestial heavens Friday, Feb. 4, 2011. She was 101.5 years old and died peacefully in her sleep. She was born in Crosby County July 30, 1909 to William Franklin "Doc" Exum and Margaret Catherine "Maggie" (Clark) Exum. She married Bill Jones July 3, 1926. She witnessed over a century of ever-changing life. Her father drove horses and buggy from Ralls to Amarillo for lumber to build the house at the end of Main Street in Ralls. She watched her great-grandchildren play games on the internet and in the middle of it all Winnie witnessed a man landing on the moon.

Winnie was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and her beloved husband, Bill Jones. Her adored son-in-law and best friend, J. B. Marshall, also passed before her.

She leaves her daughter, Minta Marshall; two grandchildren, Chris Marshall and Melissa Marshall Green, and her husband, Richard Green. She is also survived by her life's delights, great-grandchildren Cole and Carly Marshall.

Winnie was a most talented woman and tough as a boot. She survived polio in the 1950s and lived as a farm wife. She gardened, canned, made jams, crocheted and could sew anything. Her mind was sharp and she completed word puzzles every day. Winnie was honored as Outstanding Citizen of Ralls. She was a Southern Lady who helped her neighbors, shared her tornado cellar and was a great teacher in many lives. She drove her trusty black 1972 Buick until six weeks ago.

Winnie was a member of the Ralls First Baptist Church and loved her church family. She taught Sunday school for years and helped with Vacation Bible School. Winnie made beautiful floral arrangements for Sunday services for years and in the 1950s and 1960s she loved making church floats for the Ralls Rodeo parade.

Services for Winnie will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at the Ralls First Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Haddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.
