Gilbert B. Flanders was born April 29, 1916 in Waco, TX to Judge and Mary Hart Flanders. He was reared and educated in Waco, where he attended the Waco public schools. He moved to Ralls, TX in 1929. He worked as a farmer in the Acuff and Cone communities. In the early 1940´s, he became an auto mechanic for Logan Buick for about two years. He then joined forces with Joe Jester´s Garage, where they became the best of friends and partners for more than fifty years.

He also owned and managed a baseball team called the Black Spiders in the late 50´s and early 60´s. He married Ethel Dixon, who preceded him in death. He then married Willie McKnight, who also preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth Rhynhart.

He was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Gentry. He was a faithful member an was ordained a deacon of the church. He also loved to sing. "G.B." as he was called, was well known and liked by many in his community. He didn´t meet many strangers and would always greet you with a smile and a handshake. He would go the extra mile to help anyone he could, no matter who you were.

G.B. departed this life on Friday, February 4, 2000. He left to cherish his memory his son, Jodie Richardson, Jr., of Los Angeles, CA; two adopted sons, George Hal and Dean Anderson of Ralls, TX; his daughters, Clarice Thomas of Plainview, TX and Maggie Scott of Amarillo, TX; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, his special friend, Ms. Jimmie Minnitt of Floydada; his longtime friends, Elder A. Y. Lauterdale, Joe Jester and James Whitfield; a host of special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, February 20, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ralls, TX with Rev. Raymond Roberts, pastor, officiating and Elde A.Y. Lauterdale, eulogist, assisting. Active pallbearers were T.L. McQueen, Jr., Mark McQueen, K.Y. Anderson, Cedell Anderson, Marvin Jones, Don Moore and Raymond Whitfield. Honorary pallbearers were Jodie Richardson, Jr., Johnnie Richardson, J.R. Moore, Henry Bolton, Dean Anderson. Danny Johnson, James Whitfield, Joe Jester and George Hal. Others assisting with the service were Tina Weeks, Ada Anderson-Hall and Sis. Emma Jean Williams.

Obituary

Services for Gilbert B. "G.B." Flanders, 83, of Ralls were held at 11 a.m., Feb. 9, 2000, at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ralls with the Rev. A.Y. Lauterdale officiating.

Burial was in the Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home.

He died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at his home in Ralls.

He was born April 29, 1916, in Waco, Texas.

He married Willie Marie Richardson in 1948 in Crosbyton. She died January 31, 1976.

He was a member and deacon of Shiloh Baptist Church. He had been a mechanic for 50 years and had worked for Logan Buick and Joe Jester Garage. He was manager of the Ralls Black Spiders baseball team in the 1960s.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Rhynehart on March 2, 1994.

Survivors include a son, Jodie Richardson Jr. of Los Angeles; a daughter, Clarice Thomas of Plainview; a stepdaughter, Maggie Scott of Amarillo, four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
