Personal

Ossie Fields, one of the most respected Blacks in the community, came to Ralls, TX in the fall of 1919 from his native Nacogdoches County. After working on a farm for a sort time, he worked for the First National Bank and then for the Security State Bank until his retirement in 1970.

Ossie stated that there were no churches for Blacks when he arrived, and that he helped organize the Baptist Church in 1923. Services were held in the homes until a building was erected in 1925. At that time only two or three families lived in the part of town where the church was built as most Blacks lived on the premises of the families for whom they worked.

Ossie lived on the premises of the Percy Ralls´ family prior to 1924 when he bought a lot in what was later called "the flats." He owned property then until his death. He, like many other Blacks of the community, was active in church and civic affairs.
