Biography

O. W. "Dock" Denning was born April 2, 1887 in Jack County, Texas. He married Martha Seletha Cullers December 16, 1906 at Bryson in Jack County. They had one child, Charles Oliver, born in Jack County, December 6, 1910. In 1911 they moved to Torrance County, New Mexico. While they were living there, ranching and farming, Doris Beatrice was born June 18, 1913, Clinton Alford was born January 21, 1917 and Mary Corine was born July 3, 1922.

In the fall of 1924 they moved to Crosby County. They lived on farms in the Fairview, New Home, Ralls, Farmer, and Cone communities. The children attended school at all these schools except Cone.

Their youngest child, Billie Bruce, was born April 25, 1925. He only lived 17 months, passing away September 9, 1926 of pneumonia.

The family was active in church, school and community activities in each of the communities where they lived.

In 1932, on December 24, Doris was married to C. L. Hillin. Charles and Thelma "Teddy" Graham were married in 1934. Corine was married to Albert Mankins on February 9, 1937. Clinton and I (Loretta Parrish) were married August 2, 1941.

Mrs. Denning passed away June 25, 1957.

Denning lives near Corine about one mile east of Floydada. He celebrated his 90th birthday April 2, 1977. He is still very active, keeping his own home, visiting friends and relatives, gardening and "keeping up" with all of his family. He worked for about 15 years with the Floyd County surveyor, W. D. Newell. After that, he worked with the Green Thumb Project two or three years. He retired "for good" when he was 87 years old.

Charles and Teddy have five children, all married: Donaleta of Dallas, Wallace of El Paso, Wesley of Lampasas, and Jimmy and Randy, both of Gustine. Charles and Teddy have lived at Gustine since about 1963. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Cone and Fairview communities. They have seven grandchildren.

Doris lives in Houston. She is a widow, C. L. having passed away in November of 1966.

Corine lives at Floydada. She has three living children: Larry of Denton, Kenneth of Copperas Cove and Waylene of Floydada. Her second son, Bruce was killed in a gin accident at Brownfield October 18, 1973. She has six grandchildren. Her husband Albert Mankins passed away January 14, 1977.

Clinton and I lived in Cone community from the time we were married in 1941 until 1948 when we moved to Plainview. After the death of my dad in 1957 we moved back to the farm in January of 1958 and have lived in Cone community since that time.
