Al Ray Cooper, a Crosby County auto dealer for half a century and a longtime civic leader, was buried Friday in Ralls Cemetery following 11 a.m. memorial rites in the First United Methodist Church of Ralls. Dr. William R. Fleming, pastor of St. Luke´s United Methodist Church in Lubbock, officiated and was assisted by the Rev. Dick Richards, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Ralls.Carter-Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Cooper, 62, was pronounced dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday of last week. He had not been feeling well, but his death was totally unexpected.
Cooper resided at 3620 68th in Lubbock, having moved to that city in 1970 from Ralls.
The Leonard native moved to Ralls at the age of two and made that his home until moving to Lubbock. He was a 1937 graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Cooper was the owner of Al Cooper Motor Co., in Ralls, a dealership established by his father. Previously, he had operated an auto dealership in Crosbyton and received a 50-year pin from Ford Motor Co. in 1973.
Cooper was on the original water development board of White River Lake. He was a past president of the Ralls Rotary Club and was a member of the Emma Lodge No. 931 in Ralls.
The former Rouble Triplitt and Al Cooper were married Aug. 29, 1937 in Lubbock. Mrs. Cooper is among survivors.
Other survivors include two sons, Alan Cooper of Denver, Colo., and Eddie Cooper of Las Cruces, N.M.; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Deats of Littleton, Colo., and Mrs. Celia Drager of Midland; his father, Roy Cooper of Lubbock; a sister, Mrs. Preston Cochran of Lubbock; and four grandchildren.
