Services for Lois Chance, 92, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock with the family receiving friends from 1 p.m. until the service time. Burial will be in the Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home of Lubbock.
She died peacefully at her home on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004. She and her late twin sister, Louise Chance Callaghan, were born on May 1, 1911 to Lewis Webster and Mattie Dera Benton Chance in Old Emma, Texas, near Ralls. The two sisters were almost lifelong companions and devoted friends. Lois was a dental assistant in the service of Dr. Rogers & Dr. O'Rear until her retirement after some 40 years. She was a member of the Ralls Church of Christ and then the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock.
She was a renowned Sunday School teacher in the Broadway program for 65 years. The last 23 years of her life, until the day of her passing, she devoted herself daily to befriending and ministering to residents in Lubbock area Nursing Homes such as Silver Seasons, Lutheran Home of West Texas, Carousel, Mi Casita, and Tumbleweed in Brownfield. She was the recipient of many honors from community groups because of the 32-40 hours of weekly volunteer hours that she contributed to those whom she daily loved at the end of their lives. She was a very strong sister to her siblings and aunt to a large number of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by siblings, Francis Whadford, Louise Callaghan, Cecil Chance, L.W. Chance, and Juanita Chance Moncrief. In addition, she was preceded in death by JoAnn Cochran, niece. Lois was never married.
She is survived by her brothers, Edgar Chance of Lubbock, Raymond Chance of Ralls, Bill Chance of Cloudcroft, N.M. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews who enjoyed her love and devotion as an almost second mother. Among them are Dr. Lewis Moncrief, Benjamin Moncrief, Judith Moncrief Lovelace, Nancy Lois Moncrief Worley, Steven Moncrief, Sally Buck, E dgar Chance, Jr., Sidney Chance, Gerald Chance, Kenny Chance, Victor Whadford, Sharon Dera Whadford Smith, Cynthia Louise Whadford Cave, Gary Whadford, Michael Chance, Jim Chance, Pam Chance Morgan, John Chance, Bob Chance, Sue Ann Chance Gibson. As great-aunt, she was able to be daily and intimately involved with loving and raising Will, Michael, Chris, Brad, and Katy Moncrief of Shallowater. Pallbearers will be Gerald Chance, John Chance, Sidney Chance, Wayne Smith, Dr. Lewis Moncrief, and Victor Whadford. Honorary Pallbearers will be her brothers; Edgar, Raymond, and Bill. Memorials should be made to the Children's Home of Lubbock or Lubbock Christian University.
