Dete, as she was called by friends and family was born on November 21, 1925 and grew up on the family farm in New Home, near Ralls Texas, where she attended grammar school and then Ralls High School, graduating in 1943. She continued her education, graduating from Draughan's Business School in Lubbock Texas. She traveled extensively around the world and throughout the US, and often told of learning to fly before she learned to drive, purchasing her first automobile in Germany. Dete never married or had any children of her own, yet family was an important part of her life and she enjoyed visiting often and giving gifts to them.

She is survived by her siblings: Leota Hudgens of Ralls, TX; Leatha Mae Smiley of Morrilton, AR; and Don Bennett of Burlington, CO, as well as a God-daughter, Marilynn Forrester of Santa Fe, CA and a God-son, Gary Franz of San Antonio, TX; 12 cousins, 5 nieces, 3 nephews, 6 great-nieces, 10 great-nephews, and numerous great-great nieces and nephews, as well as great-great-great ones!

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Ruby Bennett, longtime residents of Ralls, Texas and a brother, Billy 'Bud' Bennett of Lubbock.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Lubbock and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
