Obituary

Memorial rites for Roy R. Abell Jr., well known Ralls civic leader and the second of three generations of a Crosby County automobile dealership, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church in Ralls. The Rev. David Ray, pastor, officiated.

Interment was made in Ralls Cemetery, under direction of Carter-Adams Funeral Home.

Mr. Abell, 65, was claimed by death at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday in Lubbock General Hospital following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 21, 1918, in Mineral Wells, he moved with his parents an one brother to Lorenzo in 1921. Two other brothers were born while the family resided in Lorenzo.

His father, Roy Abell Sr., was operating a service station in Lorenzo when a car salesman persuaded him to order one vehicle for $50 down. When that car was received and sold, another was ordered. This was the founding of Abell Chevrolet Co.

In 1936, the family moved to Ralls where the dealership was owned by Roy Abell Sr. until his son purchased the business in 1955.

Roy Jr. owned and operated the firm until selling to his son, Danny, in 1981. The dealership is now Abell Chevrolet Oldsmobile.

The former Billy Mary Gleaton and Roy Abell Jr. were married June 21, 1939, in Ralls.

Following service in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, he returned to Ralls.

He served as chairman of the pastor-parish committee and the administrative board of First United Methodist Church in Ralls.

Mr. Abell also was active in civic affairs, being a member of the Ralls Chamber of Commerce, the housing board and a former school trustee. He was a Rotarian and a Mason.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Danny Abell and Davey Abell, both of Ralls; two brothers, Earl C. Abell and Lyman Abell, both of Ralls; and four grandchildren. Another brother, Billy Wayne Abell, preceded him in death.
