Billy Joe Scarbrough, 83, of Abernathy went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. He was born June 7, 1933 in Lubbock County to J.O. and Edith (Lee) Scarbrough. Billy Joe married Wilma Watley on October 9, 1954 and was married for 49 years until her death on March 26, 2004. He married Ruth Anne Nelson on January 15, 2005.
Billy Joe was a Freemason, a member of the American Legion, and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in New Deal. He farmed in the Lorenzo area from 1972 to 1983 and was a board member of the Co-Op Gin. He also operated a car dealership from 1983 to 2011 in Lubbock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Wilma, and a daughter Linda Gail.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth Anne (Nelson) Scarbrough of Abernathy; daughter Sheila McCallister and husband Danny of Lubbock; son Mike Scarbrough and wife Anita of Frisco; sister Delores Jennings of Lorenzo; three brothers: Carroll Scarbrough of Lewisville, Arkansas; Edward Scarbrough of Richmond; Ronald Scarbrough of Lubbock; his grandchildren: Denae and Andrew Schwab, Danica and Nathan Otten, D.J. McCallister, Kendra Scarbrough and Brant Scarbrough; two step-daughters: Sharon Brewer and husband Butch of Tyler, Julie Bowen and husband Monty of Plainview; step-son Glenn Nelson and wife Cindy of Odessa; eight step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held 10am Saturday, September 3, at Lorenzo Cemetery under the care of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 pm Saturday, September 3, at New Deal First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 6-7 pm Friday, September 2, at Adams Funeral Home in Lorenzo.
