John A. Stobaugh, known as "Buck" came to Lorenzo with his parents, Cal and Lula Stobaugh, sisters and brother in 1922. They farmed and were pioneer "Piggly Wiggly" store owners. He and my mother, Ileene Wampler, married in 1930.Where do I begin to tell about my Daddy? He was well known as a storyteller and a wit (also somewhat of a character). Members of the community have told me of his kindness to them during the depression years. One family reports that when they moved to the farm on a terrible sandstormy day, Daddy brought them a welcome box of groceries. When he saw their very sick baby girl, he returned to town and came back with the doctor and milk. He would carry the customers bills until after the cotton harvest. I remember as a child that once he had me come see what he called a $10,000 bonfire - grocery bills that were never paid. There was also an impromptu eggnog party on Christmas morning in the Piggly Wiggly, 1940. The Creamery was in the back of the store. A can of cream, eggs and various other flavorings were rolled in the aisles of the store until thoroughly mixed, then served to customers who were making last minute purchases for Christmas dinner. I´m not sure this was a kindness.
Mother taught third grade for many years in Lorenzo and Ralls. I would imagine she taught nearly everyone who went through Lorenzo schools 1922-1930 and 1949-1963. She taught generations of several families. She was a founding member of the Lorenzo Study Club and Crosby County School Superintendent.
