Elmer SimmonsU.S.Flag   Services for Elmer Simmons, 82, of Lorenzo will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Lorenzo First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kelly Inman and Rev. Wes Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo. Elmer passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at his home in Lorenzo.

He was born May 27, 1927 in Childress to the late Milton Miles and Maggie (McCoy) Simmons. On June 22, 1997 he married Wanell (Askew) Kirksey in Lorenzo. He moved to Lorenzo in 1952 from Ralls. He served on the Lorenzo School Board when the new school was built, the Lorenzo First United Methodist Church board when the new church was built and was a member of the Lorenzo Coop Gin board when the new gin was built. He also served as Sunday School superintendant of the Lorenzo First United Methodist Church. Elmer was also a member of the Caprock Classic Car Club and was recognized as a Farmer of the Year in the 1960's. He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII.

He is preceded in death by a brother, C. K. Simmons on April 28, 2009 and a sister Vivian Simmons on May 29, 1989. Survivors include; his wife Wanell of Lorenzo; children, David Simmons and wife Penny of Lorenzo, Judy Mann and husband Tony of Lubbock, Donald Kirksey and wife Melanie of Idalou and Lynn Stevens of Lubbock; a brother and his wife, Cleo and Ruby Simmons of Crosbyton, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and his first wife Johnnie Belle Shaw of Lubbock. Serving as pallbearers will be, Tommy Morrison, Clabourne Beshirs, Jackie Parchman, Terry Hurst, Tony Martin and Jerry Swetnam. Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert "Hop" Boyd, Wayland Houchin and Elvis Reese.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 30, 2009 from 6 PM to 7 PM at Adams Funeral Home in Lorenzo. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to either the Lorenzo Sr. Citizens at P. O. Box 571 Lorenzo, Texas 79343 of the Lorenzo First United Methodist Church at P. O. Box 429 Lorenzo, Texas 79343.
