Biography

Granddaughter said her grandfather was born in Georgia, and her grandmother's maiden name was WALKER. No record of granddaughter's name.

John Marion MARTIN was born 5 January 1847. Mrs. Delaware Martin gave their marriage date as January 1872, in Murry County, Georgia, They moved to TX on January 1882. He died 8 November 1929 in the county of Crosby. He was buried in the cemetery at Lorenzo, TX. They moved to Crosby County about 1906. The Application #50632 Form B. for widow's pension shows her residence in Crosby County, mailing address R.F.D. 1, Petersburg, Texas; dated 24 February 1932, her age 87; birth date 3 January 1845. she died 28 February 1934. Approval date of Pension was 12 March 1932, allowed from April 1, 1932.

War Department Records, dated March 3, 1932: "John Oates was Captain of Company F, 3rd Regiment Confederate Cavalry". The records show that John Martin, also borne as John M. Martin, not found as John Marion Martin, private, above named organization, enlisted May 10, 1862, at Spring Place, Georgia. Muster Roll for May and June 1864, last roll on file, shows him absent, captured at Tulahome, Tennessee, received July 7, 1863, at Military prison, Louisville, Kentucky, forwarded same day to Camp Chase, Ohio, received July 14, 1863, at Fort Delaware, Delaware, where he was released June 10, 1865, on taking oath of allegiance to the United States. His residence is shown as Murray County, Tennessee. Complexion light, sandy hair, eyes gray, height 5 feet 11 inches.
