Funeral services for Walter Barney Marlar, 50, who died unexpectedly at his home here Saturday night, (7 Sept 1959) were held at 2 p.m. Monday (9 Sept 1959) in Lorenzo First Methodist Church.

Officiating was Rev. U. S. Sherrill, pastor of Spade Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Marvin Fisher, Lorenzo Methodist pastor. Burial was in Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Carter Funeral Home.

Marlar, who suffered a heart ailment three or four years ago, was found dead at his home about 10 p.m. Saturday. He had been preparing to go to a Masonic Lodge meeting when his mother, Mrs. Minnie Marlar and sister, Miss Bonnie Ruth Marlar, left the house earlier in the evening. His body was found seated in a chair when they returned.

Born in Ben Lomand, Ark., Sept 4, 1908, Marlar came to Lorenzo from Dimmitt in 1935 with other members of the family. A bachelor, he was regarded as a father to the family since the death of their father in 1928. Marlar had been a member of the Methodist church for almost 40 years. He was also a Mason.

He is survived by his mother, five brothers, Hal and Tommie of San Antonio, Venoie of Jal, N.M., and Paul and Cody, both of Lorenzo; and three sisters, Mrs. Wiley (Ruby) Smith of Oil Center, N.M., Mrs. Johnny (Claudia) Cox and Bonnie Ruth Marlar, both of Lorenzo.

Pallbearers were Jimmy and Bobby Marlar, Gary and Ronnie Cox, Bricky Marlar, Kenney Smith and V.E. Mundell.

Honorary pallbearers included Ronnie Smith, Jerry Bartlett, Jimmy Alred and Herschel McMillan.

Out-of-town relatives attending funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Marlar and children, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Marlar, all of San Antonio; Mr. and Mrs. J.V. Marlar, Jal, N.M.; Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Smith, Oil Center, N.M.; Mrs. Jeff Hayden and children, Odessa; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Cox, Alpine; V.E. Mundell, Clovis, N.M. and Mrs. Bob Slobaugh and children, Amarillo.
