Mrs. W. O. (Sylvia) Liston died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the office of Dr. Ted Means after being driven there from the Lorenzo schools by her daughter, Sharon. She became ill at school and apparently suffered a heart attack. Mrs. Liston was well known throughout the area because of her participation in church, school, civic, and club activities.Mrs. Liston was born in Oil City, Louisiana, October 8, 1917 and was a graduate of Odessa High School and Texas Tech. Commuting to West Texas State University in Canyon last summer, she was near completion of work on her Masters Degree.
She began her teaching career at the age of twenty years in Sudan, Texas where she married Bill Liston December 24, 1940. She taught in the Lorenzo schools in 1958-59 and again from 1965 to the present date. They moved to Lorenzo in 1947 where Bill has been manager of Higginbotham-Bartlett since that time.
Mrs. Liston was member of the First United Methodist Church of Lorenzo where she had served as organist since 1949. She also was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Order of the Eastern Star, Wesleyan Guild, and Woman's Study Club. A longtime leader in Boy Scout and Girl Scout work, she was den mother for a cub scout den 1955-1958 and has served as a troop leader and troop consultant for the Girl Scouts for the past twelve years. Through her efforts, the Lorenzo Girl Scout Troop #232 was awarded the Reader's Digest Award of $400 in 1966. She spearheaded two Senior Girl Scout groups to Washington, D.C. in 1965 and 1968. As a part of the Caprock Council, she attended Round-Up in 1965 where she worked with a special group in Couer D'Alene, Idaho. She also had served as a member of the staff at the Lorenzo Leader.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Holman officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Bruce Parks of the First United Methodist Church of Slaton, and Rev. John Jenkins, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lorenzo.
She is survived by her husband, W. O. (Bill) Liston, manager of Higginbotham-Bartlett Lumber Co. here; her mother, Mrs. Marie Smith of Gladewater; one son, Vance Liston of St. Louis, MO.; two daughters, Sharon Liston, a senior at Southern Methodist University and Vicki Liston, a sophomore at Texas Tech; one brother, Buford Smith of Las Vegas, Nev. and a granddaughter, Kelli.
Burial was in Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Carter Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were L. J. Hurst, Bobby Jennings, Al Zumbrun, John R. Green, Leon Keene and Joe W. Brown.
