Biography

Jessie Jackson Jenkins, son of Jessie and Sarah Tisdale Jenkins of Whitney, Texas and Clara Cornelia Womack of Georgiana, Alabama were united in marriage December 28, 1899 at Birdstone, Texas. While there, Jess worked as a ginner and carpenter. A son, John Cooper Jenkins, was born to them July 19, 1903. They moved to Hamlin, Texas in February in December 1904. There another son, Lewis Hubert Jenkins, was born February 1, 1905. Hubert died July 2, 1927.

The Jenkins moved to Estacado, January 10, 1916. Jess and Clara were active in farming at Estacado and at Lorenzo the remainder of their lives.

They were active emmbers of the Baptist Church and Jess served as a deacon. Besides farming, Jess raised registered Jersey cattle and was a director of the Jersey Cattle Show in Plainview. He also served as trustee of Wayland College.

Jessie died February 20, 1968 at the age of 92 years. Clara died July 11, 1970 at the age of 95 years.

Their son, John, married Autie Irma McCuistion of Stamford, July 27, 1927. John and Autie have three children, John Rister, J.J., and Nan Iris.

John received his M.A. at Hardin-Simmons where he wrote the thesis, "A History of Estacado, A Quaker Settlement and Its Environs." John and Autie were teachers, having taught in Muleshoe, Slaton, Garland and Lorenzo. While in Garland, John worked in a defense plant as a tool maker during World War II. He was in the tractor and implement business at Kaufman before moving to Lorenzo to resume teaching. John and Autie taught in Lorenzo until 1968 when they retired and moved to Roswell, New Mexico.
