Verna Darden

Services for Verna Wristen Darden, 78, of Lorenzo were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6,1993, in Lorenzo First Baptist Church with the Revs. Price Matheison, Chaplain of Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Dr. D. L. Lowrie, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lubbock, Rev. Jack Pearce, a retired Baptist minister from Lubbock and Dr. Jerry Golden, pastor of the Lorenzo Baptist Church officiating.

Burial was in Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Carter-Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.

Mrs. Darden died at 5:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1993, in Lubbock Methodist Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Dexter, N.M., and married M. T. "Theady" Darden on Dec. 30, 1933, in Abernathy. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lorenzo Study Club, Lorenzo Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lorenzo First Baptist Church where she taught a Bible class. She was past worthy patron of the Lorenzo Chapter of the order of the Eastern Star. She moved to the Lorenzo area in August of 1926. A daughter, Betty D. Lockwood, died on Feb. 28, 1965, by a brother, Raymond Wristen and by a great-granddaughter Molly Wristen McCurdy, and by two sisters, Thelma McCrory and Faye Blackwell.

Survivors include her husband, M.T. "Theady" Darden; three daughters, Mrs. Randy (Myrna) Parsons of Lubbock, Mrs. Phil (Mary) Matheison of Abilene and Mrs. Allen (Bobbie Jean) Eaker of Altus, Okla.; a son-in-law, Robert and his wife Sharon Lockwood of Lorenzo; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Plains Baptist Assembly, Route 3, Box 162, Floydada, Texas 79235, or the Lorenzo First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Box K, Lorenzo, Texas 79343.

M.T. "Theady" Darden

Graveside services for M.T. "Theady" Darden, 90, will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Lorenzo Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Lorenzo First Baptist Church with Rev. Price Mathieson, Rev. D.L. Lowrie, and Rev. Dennis Williams officiating.

Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Lorenzo. Mr.Darden passed away on April 21, 2003 in Lubbock. Theady was born in Tuxedo, in Jones County, July 27, 1912. His parents were William Wallace and Josephine Riddle Darden. Theady was the youngest of seven children, all of whom preceded him in death. Theady finished ninth grade at Webb School on the East Plains. He worked on ranches from the age of 12 until he started farming near Lorenzo in 1932. He, along with his brother, Joe, helped build U.S. Highway 82 from Lubbock to Crosbyton.

In 1933, he married Verna Wristen of Lorenzo. Ranching was his passion and he owned ranches in Dickens County for many years. He was a member of the National Quarterhorse Association, Southwest Cattleman"s Association, a charter member of Crosby County Sheriff"s Posse, and Texas Tech Ranching Heritage Association. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, served on the Lorenzo School Board and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lorenzo, where he served as a Deacon and church treasurer for many years. Theady was instrumental in starting the Mexican Baptist Mission in Lorenzo, which is now the Iglesia Bautista Jerusalem. His love for missions took him to Alaska, Japan, the state of Washington, and Brazil. For 24 years, he served on the Board of Trustees for the Plains Baptist Assembly. He also served on the Executive Board for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 1990, he was named outstanding Layman of the Year for the Lubbock Baptist Association. He is preceded in death by his wife, Verna, who passed away Feb. 5, 1993; a daughter, Betty Lockwood; and a great-granddaughter, Molly Wristen McCurdy.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Mathieson of Abilene and husband Price, Myrna Parsons of Lubbock and her husband Randy, and Bobbie Eaker of Altus, Okla., and her husband Allen; grandchildren Renee and Kevin Burkman of Abilene, Pam and Randy Kettleboeter of Marietta, Calif., Matt and Beck Parsons of Cottage Grove, Ore., Ron and Susan Lockwood of Bolton, Mass., Mark and Cindy Lockwood of Alpine, Todd and Rebecca Eaker of Atlanta, Ga., and Jason Eaker of Altus, Okla. Theady is also survived by Robert and Sharon Lockwood of Lorenzo and Pam and Craig Cook of Hale Center, and by six great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Matt Parsons, Randy Kettle-Boeter, Kevin Burkman, Todd Eaker, Jason Eaker, John McCurdy,and Craig Cook. Memorials may be made to Plains Baptist Assembly Christian Camp, RR 3, Box 162, Floydada, TX 79235 or to a charity of choice. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home, Lorenzo.
