Melvin Childs photoU.S.Flag   LUBBOCK — Melvin Childs of Ft. Worth, formerly a long time resident of Lubbock, passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2014. He was born May 31, 1925, in El Dorado, Ark. to Willie and Emmie (Wedgeworth) Childs.

Melvin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II. When returning home, he worked for United Supermarkets for over 30 years before retiring. He married Norma Briscoe on Nov. 28, 1946. Melvin was a member of the American Legion G. S. Berry Post 575 and First Baptist Church in Lubbock.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Norma; daughter, Judy Schilling and husband, Ken of Ft. Worth; sister, Nelda Joy Heket of Amarillo; granddaughter, Jan Bowling and husband, Trent of Keller; and two great-grandchildren, Brilynn and Brielle Bowling.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Debra Childs.

Visitation will begin at 2 pm. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends 6 to 7:30 p.m. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Combest Family Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at the Lorenzo Cemetery.
