The Joe Bowers family moved from Erath County to the Lorenzo area November 20, 1915. Our oldest son, Max, born December 5, 1913, was almost two years old. We lived on the Ed Parchman place seven miles southwest of Lorenzo that first year and leased 80 acres of land from Mr. Brewster of Lockney. We bought the place in 1917 and lived there three years. Also, we were renting 160 acres of the Hendricks´ land.
Allene, our second child, was born January 15, 1916. Mr. And Mrs. Roy Cox were our good neighbors. Their three little girls, Ethel, Edna and Ruby were always glad to come play with our children and carry them when I wanted to walk to the Cox home for a visit. We didn´t have many neighbors. The country was just being settled. The prairies were turning into farms. People came from Erath and Red River counties and Lorenzo began to grow.
Our second son, Earl, was born January 23, 1918. We built a new style little home on the 80 acres. It had an oval roof and full sized windows. We were so proud of it because it was ours! I made white curtains and trimmed them in lace. We papered the walls and hung our pictures and new calendars. We placed the furniture all around the walls and put the potbellied stove in the middle. It was pretty crowded, but we were used to that.
In 1919, we bought our first Model T Ford and also bought another farm three miles east of Lorenzo. We sold that farm in 1920, and bought our present home, three miles northwest of Lorenzo to be near the school. Billie Jo, our youngest daughter, was born December 18, 1924. All our children finished high school in Lorenzo and attended Texas Tech.
In June, 1935, Max married Leora Handley of Lamesa. They both lost their lives in a plane crash in 1966. Their son, Joe, was killed in a car wreck in February 1976. Maxine, their daughter, lives in Morton. Allene married Don Samford in November , 1940; they now live on a farm and ranch near Morton. They have one son, Johnny. Earl and Shirley Wheeler were married in California in December, 1941. They have two daughters, Pam and Patti. Billie Jo married L. W. "Blacky" Bownds in December, 1947. Blacky died of a heart attack in April, 1977. They have two children, David and Diane. Billie Jo and Diane live together near me.
Mr. Bowers died on July 13, 1971.
I am still holding down the home place, the yard and garden, too.
