Obituary

Woody WilmethWoodrow "Woody" Wilmeth, 90, of Lubbock, came into this world on the bitter cold morning of December 5, 1918 feet first waiting on the country doctor. He was born in Dickens County on one of the many arms of the Caprock that extend out around the West Texas country side. He was a bit of a gypsy, which he inherited from his father. They moved from Monument, N.M. to Ralls, Texas, where the family lived in a covered wagon before moving to a half dugout. As a young boy, Woody helped his father drive cattle across the Llano Estacado from Lea County, N.M. to Crosby County, Texas.

Like so many families on the South Plains, they survived the depression by farming and raising their own food. When World War II broke out, he went to California and helped build planes the country needed for the war effort. Returning to Texas, he met and married his help mate for life, Hollyce Harber, on the morning of March 2, 1947. They settled on land in the county of Yoakum and began farming. He started several businesses that included an oil company, caf, and hardware store. After retiring in 1989, he and his wife moved to Lubbock, where they lived until his death on June 15, 2009.

He was the second of 10 siblings and is survived by his wife, Hollyce; youngest brother, Thorne; three children, Kathleen Cowart, Carolyn Truss, and Bryan Wilmeth; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Estacado Cemetery, located 6 miles East of Idalou, CR 3900, North 5 miles, East 1 mile. The family will receive friends at Sanders Funeral Home from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today. A procession to the cemetery will be leaving at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday from Sanders Funeral Home.

Hollyce WilmethThere are truly angels among us and when they smile it fills your heart with warmth and love.

On the morning of January 24, 1926, Hollyce Harber Wilmeth was born to Robert and Dora Elizabeth Harber. She grew up in the sunshine of Abilene, Texas under the shade of the mesquite trees. She finished high school at Abilene High while living with her Aunt Doris, another angel placed on this earth.

Hollyce was working in a drug store when on a typically humid evening she met her soul mate for life, "Woody" Wilmeth at a summertime gospel meeting. After they were married they traveled to Kerrville, Texas for their honeymoon. He took her from the only place she knew to West Texas where he owned a farm. They moved in with his father and four brothers. Later convincing him she would live in a tent if only she could leave, so he built a four walled box, but it was a mansion to her.

A little girl growing up only knowing a simple life never dreaming their lives together would lead her to a great adventure where they worked together building a life in a great land of opportunity, allowing them to prosper, traveling around the world seeing all the wonders God made. Her bright and shining spirit went home on October 10, 2011.

She is survived by a son, Carl Bryan Wilmeth; two daughters, Carolyn Truss and Kathleen Cowart; a sister, Perry Weir; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

We pray she watches over all she loved that saw the sparkle in her eyes bringing joy to all she knew.

Family will receive friends at Sanders Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 until 6:30 p.m.
