Source: The book, "Through the years - a History of Crosby County", Spikes & Ellis, relates: "Mr. Bonine was born in Missouri, January 1, 1837. He moved to Texas before 1900 and was married to Cynthia Anderson, February 22, 1863, at Gainesville, TX."
During early years they lived in Brown County. Indian raids were made at least once a month. The Bonine family with three other families would move to one house for protection, taking time about with their homes. They would not have a light at night.
After living in Magnum, OK, the Bonines moved to Emma in Crosby County, TX. Their sons, W. T., Jim and Reese lived at Emma awhile with their families. Their youngest son, Earl W., a lad when they moved to Emma, lived there after his marriage until his untimely death by drowning in the lake south of Emma in 1913.
J. W. Bonine farmed near Emma until his death in January, 1922, at the age of eighty-five years. Mrs. Bonine, passed away in 1906.
(The only daughter, Annie, moved with her husband, Robert M. King, to Crosby County in April 1900. They lived in and near Emma, later moving to Plainview. They had five sons. One son, J. R. King, owned King Motel, Kermit, TX in October 1965.)
