Obituary

Services for Robert Jennings Work, 86, of Crosbyton, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in the First United Methodist Church of Crosbyton with the Rev. Henry Salley, Plainview District superintendent of the United Methodist Churches, officiating, and the Rev. Tom Woodward assisting.

Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home.

Work died Dec. 15, 1998, at Lubbock´s Methodist Hospital.

He was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Whitlock, TN. He came to Texas on a train with his parents in 1921, settling in Crosbyton. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1937.

He married Mary Higginbotham on Jan. 1, 1954, in Chillicothe, TX. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Crosbyton, where he taught the Opportunity Sunday School class. He was a member of the church choir and the administrative council. He was a 50-year member of the Crosbyton Lion´s Club, serving as Lion Boss, and as a director of the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce.

Work was Crosbyton´s Man of the Year in 1952 and Citizen Through the Years in 1979.

He served on several boards, including White River Municipal Water District, Crosbyton Clinic Hospital, Crosbyton Independent School District, Pioneer Memorial Museum, Senior Citizens Center, and the Education Service Center, Region 17. He served as interim Chamber of Commerce manager and served on the Chamber Committee at the time the Crosbyton Swimming Pool was built.

He was a former mayor of Crosbyton and served as the Crosby County Judge for 16 years before retiring in 1986.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry Work of Idalou, Wiley Work of Lamar, CO; a daughter, Martha Kirk of Crosbyton, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
