CROSBYTON (Special) - Services for J.W. Wood, 71, of Crosbyton will be at 2 p.m. today in Crosbyton First Baptist Church with the Revs. Lester B. Griffin, pastor, and Jerry Gentry, pastor of Woodrow First Baptist Church, officiating.Burial will be in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home.
Wood died at 9:11 am. Thursday in Crosbyton Hospital after an illness.
He was born in Becton and married Velma Ruth Reed on Nov. 22, 1945, in Crosbyton. He graduated from Crosbyton High School and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart, and he was a heavy machine operator and land improvement contractor until retiring in 1990. He moved to Crosbyton from Idalou in 1935. He was a member of Crosbyton First Baptist Church and the Downtown Bible Class.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Diane Bailey of St. Charles, Mo.; a sister, Sue John Forgus of Crosbyton; and a granddaughter.

Services for Velma Ruth Wood, 83, of Crosbyton were held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 26, 2007 in the Crosbyton First Baptist Church with Duane McClure, brother-in-law and David Troublefield, nephew, officiating. Burial followed in the Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.
Velma Ruth passed away Sunday, September 23, 2007 in Lubbock. She was born September 28, 1923 in Bridgeport, Texas to the late Hermon Eakes and Vera Lucille (Cormack) Reed. On November 22, 1945 she married J. W. Wood in Crosbyton. He preceded her in death April 8, 1993.
Velma Ruth moved to Crosbyton in 1937 from Bridgeport and was a 1940 graduate of Crosbyton High School. Shortly after graduation she began working in the Crosby County Clerk's office. WWII brought the development of the Rationing Board and with it an emergency appointment through Civil Service. Velma Ruth was the first woman to serve in that office and remained there until it closed in 1945. She continued working for many years in other Crosby County offices. She was an active member of the Crosbyton First Baptist Church for 69 years where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a board member of the Crosbyton Cemetery Association for many years.
She is survived by her daughter Diane Bailey and husband Tom of Springfield, Ohio, one brother W. H. "Buster" Reed and wife Gwen of Bowie, two sisters, Herma Loy Farris and husband Joe of Lubbock and Roberta McClure and husband Duane of Nocona, Texas and a granddaughter Katie Robinette and husband David of North Baltimore, Ohio. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, 600 SW 11th Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79101.
