Biography

Arlind Lee Winegar, son of Ambrose and Lizzie Brazell Winegar, was born in Comanche in 1920. He moved to Crosby Co. in 1937 and farmed with R.C. Ratheal. He lived in a one-room house, without running water or electric power, on he edge of the canyon on the McNeill place. He carried his water from a well to the house.

In 1939 he married Alma "Bill" Spence, daughter of Richard Mack and Wealthy Starrett Spence and born in Crosbyton in 1921.

Arland and Alma have three children: Harvey Mack, Robert Lee, and Georgia Ann "Chick", all born in Crosby Co.

They ran Broadway Store when Robert was a baby and began farming (with an old used H. Farmall tractor) the Grandpa Starrett Estate in 1947.

Arlind served in the army in World War II. He farmed in Crosby Co. from 1926-73. He also operated a tomato greenhouse from 1967-76. He and Bill moved to Longbrach, in Panola Co. where he resumed mail carrier duties.

Harvey Mack Winegar has one son, Winfred Winegar born in Fuida, Germany.

Robert Lee has one son, Larry Todd Winegar, born in Lawton, Okla., and a daughter Cynthia Michelle Winegar, born in Arlington.

Georgia Ann Winegar married Michell Dee Berry. They have two children, Dusty D. Wayne and Summer Ambrose Berry, both born in Lubbock, TX.

Services for Arlind L. Winegar, 77, of Farmersville and formerly of Crosbyton, were held 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 1997, in the Crosbyton First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lester Griffin, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home

Mr. Winegar died at 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, in Wilson & Jones Hospital in Sherman, TX, following an illness.

He was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Comanche, TX, and married Alma "Bill" Spence on Nov. 18, 1939, in Crosbyton. He was a farmer and formerly owned Winegar Greenhouses located West of Crosbyton. He was a member of the Crosbyton First Baptist Church and had worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to Farmersville in July from Long Branch after moving from Crosbyton.

A son, Robert Lee, preceded him in death in 1990, and a grandchild, James Shelett also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Alma "Bill" a son, Harvey Mack of Cleveland, Texas; a daughter, Georgia Anne "Chick" Berry of Altus, Okla.; a brother, Marshall A. of The Colony; a sister, Abanetta Newsome of Henderson; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Travis Winegar, Kenneth Winegar, Devin Hill, Joe Wayne Shinn, Jigger Rowland, Ronnie Voigt, and Clint Winegar.

Alma "Bill" Winegar Graveside services for Alma Willie "Bill" Winegar, 83, of Altus, Okla., and formerly of Crosbyton, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at the Crosbyton Cemetery with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial is under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Mrs. Winegar passed away Monday, May 2, at her son's home in Cleveland, Texas.

She was born July 3, 1921 to Richard Mack and Wealthy (Starrett) Spence in Crosby County. On Nov. 18, 1939, she married A.L. Winegar in Crosbyton. He preceded her in death Dec. 21, 1997. She was a member of the Altus First Baptist Church and the Elizabeth Sunday school class. She was a homemaker and a member of the Home Extension Club. She moved to Altus in October 2000 from Farmersville, Texas. She is also preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Winegar, in 1990; and three sisters, Alene Thornhill, Georgia Newman, and Floy Moore.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Harvey Mack and Linda Winegar of Cleveland, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Georgia Ann "Chick" and Mike Berry of Altus, Okla.; a sister, Nellie Winegar of Crosbyton; five grandchildren, Dusty Berry, Summer Hall, and Pete, Todd and Cindy Winegar; a step-grandchild, Brenda Dickins; and eight great-grandchildren, Cade and Chance Berry, Clint and Carrie Winegar, Rachel Aaron, John Logan and Chris Shelnut, and Aspen Hall.
