Obituary

Martha Ann Bassett Williams, daughter of Crosbyton founder Julian M. Bassett, was claimed by death at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital that morning after a sudden illness at her home.

Mrs. Williams was 61.

She and a sister, Lois Carpenter, had purchased the fabled old Smith House in January and were involved in an extensive renovation project prior to re-opening the facility to the public.

The Bassett sisters had visited the Smith House with their parents in "about 1935" and had envisioned owning the facility since that time.

Mrs. Williams moved here - along with Mrs. Carpenter, their mother and other relatives - soon after the sisters purchased the Smith House. Mrs. Williams came to Crosbyton from Sweeney.

Memorial services for Mrs. Williams will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in First Baptist Church of Crosbyton. Dr. Joe Temple and Tim Temple of Abilene Bible Church will officiate.

Interment is to be made in Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the Non-Denominational Bible Church in Sweeney. She was one of the church´s founders.

Survivors include her mother, Cora Bassett of Crosbyton; one son, Julian (Loyd) Ester of Spur; two daughters, Mrs. Gail Bible of Crosbyton and Diana Goza of Sweeny; one brother, Roger Bassett of Shreveport, La.; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Carpenter of Crosbyton and Mrs. Betty Newton of Simi Valley, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
