Biography

   Bernard H. Wheeless 
   Birth: Hunt Arkansas         Death: Lubbock, Texas
   His Birth Certificate has a different name and to date 
   that name is unknown, but certificate was never corrected 
   to reflect the correct name.
   His Father: Walter Wheeless born in Arkansas
   His Mother: Mary also born in Arkansas
   He married Gladys Powers on Nov. 12, 1942 in Erick Oklahoma 
His family moved to Granite, Oklahoma from Arkansas when B.H. was 8 yrs. old. In 1939 he met Gladys Powers and they were married in 1942. They farmed in Oklahoma, but due to the bad crops they decided to move to Texas. Vernon, his brother was in Crosby County, so B.H. rented from Vernon, then bought his own place from the Spurgeon´s and another place from the Starrett´s for a total of 480 acres. B.H. retired in 1982, after moving to Crosbyton in 1980. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crosbyton. He enjoyed woodworking. He and Gladys had three boys: Edmund, Gaylen and Richard.

Services for B.H. Wheeless, 72, of Crosbyton were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 12, 1993, in the Crosbyton First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lester B. Griffin, pastor, and the Rev. Eric Morrow of the Oglesby First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home.

Mr. Wheeless died at 8:25 p.m. Friday, July 9, 1993, in Lubbock´s Methodist Hospital following an illness.

He was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Hunttown, Ark. He married Gladys Marie Powers on Nov. 12, 1942, in Erick, OK. He was a farmer and a member of Crosbyton First Baptist Church. He moved to Crosby County in 1951 from Beckham County, OK. He is preceded in death by a sister, Hallie Maloney who died in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Wheeless of Crosbyton; three sons, Edmond Wheeless of Brownwood, Richard Wheeless of Pasadena and Gaylon Wheeless of Crosbyton; two brothers, Vernon Wheeless of Crosbyton and Afton "Dick" Wheeless of Salem, OR; four sisters, Allie Maloney of Sunray, Margie Thackett of Dallas and Mary Lowe and Pat Osmer, both of Grants Pass, OR; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jason Wheeless, Brett Wheeless, Beau Wheeless, Dana Wheeless, Tommy Diserenn and Eric Morrow.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Downtown Bible Class.

Services for Gladys Marie Wheeless, 80, were at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2001, at the Crosbyton First Baptist Church with Rev. Les Griffin officiating and Eric Morrow of New York, NY officiating.

Burial was in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

She died on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1920, in Noble, Okla. She married B.H. Wheeless on Nov. 12, 1942, in Erick, Okla. He died on July 9, 1993.

She was a member of Crosbyton First Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She also served on the kitchen committee of the church. She was a member and served on the board of directors of the Crosbyton Senior Citizens. She was a member of Mount Blanco Quilting Club and the Big Four Club. She moved to Crosbyton in 1951 from Beckham County, Okla. She was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Berry Powers, Bill Powers, and Bob Powers and a sister, Lora Ewer.

Survivors include three sons, Edmond Wheeless of Brownwood, Richard Wheeless of La Porte and Gaylon Wheeless of Crosbyton; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Brett Wheeless, Beau Wheeless, Jason Wheeless, Dana Wheeless, Eric Morrow, and Ben Alton Ewer.
