Red Whatley, one of West Texas´ best known ropers and rodeo producers, lost a lengthy battle with cancer early Tuesday morning. He died in Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, where he had been a patient since Saturday.
Whatley was 59.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in First Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of King Funeral Home.
Red Whatley was a rodeo producer for over 10 years, staging shows throughout the South Plains of Texas and in New Mexico. A member of the Rodeo Cowboy Association, he was a professional calf roper for six years and formerly worked for the L-7 Ranch.
He was born June 12, 1915, in Midland and moved to Crosbyton in 1942 from Midland.
Mr. Whatley served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; his mother, Mrs. Lillie Whatley of Dumas; one daughter, Mrs. Sheila Carman of Crosbyton; two brothers, Cecil Whatley of Midland and Tom Whatley of Lordsburg, NM; five sisters, Mrs. Pearl Miller of Austin, Mrs. Opal Horn of fort Worth, Mrs. Dorothy Felts of Dumas, Mrs. Beth Hays of Channing and Mrs. Jo Nell Welch of Dallas; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services for Alma Joyce Whatley, 83, of Crosbyton, will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Crosbyton Cemetery with Rev. Ken Bevel officiating. Burial is under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton. Joyce passed away Friday, November 05, 2010 in the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.
She was born November 13, 1926 in Crosbyton to the late Lewis A. and Daisy Mae (McPike) Anderson. On December 14, 1948 she married Floyd "Red" Whatley in Dickens. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1975. A homemaker, Joyce was a member of the Baptist Church and was the rodeo secretary for Red Whatley Rodeo Productions for many years. She lived in the Crosbyton area all her life.
Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Baugh of Crosbyton, a sister, Linda Pilton of Houston, five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
