Biography

Earl C. Van Meter, Jr. and Doris Ruth Brownlow attended all their school years at McAdoo. Her mother Grace Robertson had attended the same school and her children and grandchildren were to follow her, making four generations attending the same school. Earl and Doris were married in 1941 and moved to the Van Meter farm. Earl was president of the school board for a number of years and has served on the church and Co-Op gin board. Doris was president of the Methodist Women's Society and also on P.T.A. They were active participants in community plays that were presented during the 40's and 50's. Both are still active in both church and school affairs. They have three children, Betty Ruth, Rita Ann, and James Earl.

Betty Ruth married William Bryan "Bill" Merrell in 1963. Both have B.S. degrees from West Texas State University. They have two children, Kary Ann (Wingo) and Kevin Dale. They live in Campbell, Texas. Kary Ann married Eldon Wingo in 1984. Rita Ann and Donald Ray Harris were married in 1961 and live in McAdoo where Donald is engaged in farming. They have four sons, Bobby Don, Allan Lance, Charles Ray and Shad Thomas. Bobby married Martha Jean Shaw, they have one son. Lance married Rebacca Leah Curry.

James Earl and Cleta Faye Griffin were married in 1965. They live on the "Ole Van Meter" farm southeast of McAdoo. They have two sons Robert Earl and Jarrod Trent.

Earl Van Meter, Jr. Services for Earl C. "Buck" Van Meter, 70, of McAdoo were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 1991, in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wendell Horn, pastor, officiating.

The Rev. Carl Coffey, a retired Baptist minister, assisted, and burial in Crosbyton Cemetery was directed by Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Van Meter died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1991, in Lubbock´s Methodist Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Rhome and moved to McAdoo in 1926. He married Doris Brownlow on Feb. 19, 1941, in McAdoo. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a farmer. He was a graduate of McAdoo High School and had been a McAdoo school board member of 15 years. He also had been a board member of the McAdoo Coop Gin or 19 years. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Spur Masonic Lodge and First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James Earl of McAdoo; two daughters, Betty R. Merrell of Sweetwater and Rita A. Harris of McAdoo; two sisters, Marjorie Hardy of McAdoo and Frances Taylor of Crosbyton; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
