FORT WORTH -- Eleanor Louise Smith, 87, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday in the Chapel at Robertson Mueller Harper, Russell Hudson, Chaplain, VITAS Hospice, All Saints Episcopal Hospital, officiating. Interment: Services at the grave will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. She will be interred next to her husband, Jack, in Crosbyton Cemetery in Crosbyton.

Memorials: The family respectfully requests that contributions be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

A native of Childress County, Eleanor Louise Cochran was born Aug. 4, 1912, the daughter of J.W. and Annie Cunningham Cochran. She was married to Robert Curtis "Jack" Smith.

Mrs. Smith and her husband moved to Fort Worth in 1942, and worked at Convair, building B-24 bombers. They opened boarding houses for young women coming to Fort Worth to work in the war effort. There were a succession of businesses, including three "Triple A Root Beer Drive Ins," a maternity dress shop, three ladies´ boutiques, a bakery, and during the mid to late 1950s, she owned "The Penguin Club," a very popular rock n´ roll night spot. She managed the popular entertainer, Ray Sharpe, who had several top hits during the time period. She also owned the"Araby" and "Linda Lou" night clubs.

Later, she worked several boutiques and with her partner, Lou Holmes, owned "Pink n´ Pretty" dress shop in Ridglea. She and Lou retired at ages 82 and 83 respectively. They had outlived all their customers.

She enjoyed retirement until her health began to fail. Eleanor died very peacefully in her sleep in the VITAS Hospice unit at All Saints Episcopal Hospital.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Anna May Corry and Frances Holden; and an infant brother, William Ernest.

Survivors: Sons, Jack Dale Smith of The Colony and William Ernest Smith of Fort Worth; daughter, Marsha Smith Cowdin of Fort Worth; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
