Obituary

D.E. Smith died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Breckenridge Hospital, Austin. The Crosbyton resident had been staying in Austin with a daughter since February. He had been in the hospital a week.

The retired Crosbyton merchant was born in Evant February 6, 1886. He first moved to Floyd county in 1921 and later to Crosbyton in 1939.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Hargrove, of Austin, Mrs. Virgil Spence, Lubbock, and Mrs. Charlie Wright, Mt. Blanco; a son, Rolien B., of Fort Worth; three sisters, Mrs. A.L. Wood, Lubbock, Mrs. M.E. Shaw, Dallas, Mrs. Rufus Byers, Vernon; two brothers, S.E. of Vernon and C.O. of Crosbyton; 12 grandchildren, four great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. D.E. Smith, 62, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Crosbyton First Baptist Church, with Rev. Carl Grissom, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of King Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, April 3, in the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital, following a long illness.

Born in 1891 in Georgia, Mrs. Smith moved to Texas with her parents at an early age, settling in Haskell County. She was married June 5, 1909, and she and her husband moved soon after to Chillicothe where they lived for 14 years. They later lived for four years at Floydada and moved to Crosbyton in 1939. She was converted and joined the Baptist chuch at Chillicothe and had been an active member of the Crosbyton church until she became ill.

Survivors include her husband of Crosbyton; three daughters, Mrs. Virgin Spence and Mrs. Herman Hargrove, both of Crosbyton, and Mrs. Charlie Wright of Mt. Blanco; one son, Rolein Smith, of Fort Worth; three sisters, Mrs. T.C. Hunt and Mrs. Luke Fletcher, both of Plainview, and Mrs. William Weaver, Ranger; one brother, J.A. Childers, Gatesville, and 11 grandchildren.
