Memorial services for a well known and longtime Crosbyton community resident, Clarence C. Smith, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church, Mr. Smith was 80.The Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, and Glen Gray, local Church of Christ minister, officiated.
Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.
Mr. Smith was claimed by death at 9:40 p.m last Wednesday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital following a lengthy illness. He had been hospitalized much of the time in recent months.
A lifelong farmer and rancher, Mr. Smith moved to the Big Four community in 1919. He had resided at Big Four until failing health forced his retirement from farming and he and his wife moved into Crosbyton. The couple resided at 409 S. Farmer.
Born March 5, 1902 in Claude, Clarence C. Smith moved with his family to Red Mud Community in Dickens County as a boy.
He and Mabel Fowler were married in December 1925. The couple reared their family at Big Four. Mrs. Smith succumbed in December 1970.
Mr. Smith and Juanita McCauley of Ralls were married May 27, 1971 in Dallas.
He was active in his community, having been a member of Crosbyton Masonic Lodge No. 1020 and a member of First Baptist Church in Crosbyton. He was a Mason for 32 years and was a member of the Road Runners Club in Lubbock, the Caprock CB Club and the Texas Cowboy Reunion.
He served for 25 years on the board of Crosbyton Co-op Gin, which later was American Cotton Growers and is now Associated Cotton Growers. He received a plaque last year for 25 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita; three sons, Royce Smith, Brownie Smith and Bluie Smith, all of Crosbyton; two daughters, Mary Beth Carr of Lubbock and Claris Shaw of Portland, TX; four brothers, Rex Smith of Farmington, NM, L.W. Smith of Novato, CA, Ray Smith of Portales, NM; three sisters, Mrs. Bess Parker of Tucson, AZ, Mrs. Ross Williamson of Portersville, CA, and Mrs. Lois McCarty of Gladstone, NM; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
