John Singleton Pioneer Texas Teacher Dies

RALLS (Special) - John Thomas Singleton, 83, a West Texas school teacher for near 50 years, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the University Convalescent Home, Lubbock.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, Idalou. The Rev. B.H. Kendrick, pastor, will officiate.

Masonic gravesides rites will be conducted in Crosbyton Cemetery. Burial will be under direction of Carter Funeral Home, Ralls.

Singleton was born near Oxford, Miss. He taught in Eastland and Comanche counties for 25 years and in Garza, Lubbock and Crosby counties for 24 years. He moved to Crosby County in 1937 and retired from teaching in 1952.

He attended Hankins Normal College, John Tarleton College and Texas Tech.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby; two sons, J.T., 1328 62nd St., Lubbock; and Allen, 3505-B Oxford St., Lubbock; a daughter, Miss Laverne Singleton of the home; two brothers, A.N., Brownwood, and D.C., Ranger; and two grandchildren.

Members of Idalou Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member will serve as pallbearers.
