Les Griffin, pastor, and the Rev. Harry Pittam, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lovington, N.M., officiating.
Masonic graveside services followed in the Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.
Mr. Self died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital following an illness.
He was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Spur, TX, and married Murleen "Blondie" Harris on Dec. 30, 1949, in Lamesa.
He was a graduate of Klondike High School and attended Texas A&M. He moved to the Crosbyton area in 1949 from Lamesa.
He was a member of Crosbyton First Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner. He was a member and Past Master of the Crosbyton Masonic Lodge #1020. He was a charter member of the Lubbock Scottish Rite and a member of the Khiva Temple in Amarillo. He was a former member of the Spur Masonic Lodge. Hill Top was dedicated to him one year in the 1980´s.
He was a member of the Crosbyton E.M.S. and was named the 1997 Emergency Care Attendant of the Year by the South Plains Emergency Medical Systems.
He presently served as Mayor of Crosbyton. He served as Crosby County Commissioner from 1979 to 1994 and served as President of the West Texas Judges and Commissioners Association and Vice President of the Texas Association of Judges and Commissioners.
He served on the Crosbyton school board from 1967 to 1976, and he was named Honorary Chapter Farmer by the Crosbyton Future Farmers of America.
He was named Citizen Through the Years in 1988 by the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Murleen "Blondie" Self of Crosbyton; two daughters and their husbands, Jacque and Aubrey Stark of Lubbock and Gwen and Phil Warren of Lazbuddie; his parents, Lossie and D.J. Dean of Lubbock; two brothers, Nat Self of Conroe and David Dean of Boise, Idaho, ID; a sister, Ramona Madison of Midland; and four grandchildren, Eric and Shannon Stark of Lubbock, Cody Stark of Lubbock, Josh Warren of Lubbock, and Roxann Warren of Lazbuddie.
