Obituary

Mrs. Mary Romane, one of the community´s most loved citizens, is dead.

The jovial, witty 90 year old Mrs. Romane succumbed at 1:10 p.m. Thursday in Crosbyton Hospital. Arthritis in her legs and feet confined her to bed or a wheelchair in recent years, but her general health was good until recent months.

Born August 29, 1882, in Gonzales County, she moved to this community from Childress County in 1917. She had occupied the same residence, one mile north of town, since 1918.

Her first husband, Wade Burrows, was an early day freighter, hauling from Childress to Matador. After his death, his wife accepted responsibilities of freighting with a horse-drawn wagon across the barren West Texas.

Celebrating her 90th birthday this past August 29, Mrs. Romane stated "I feel pretty good...and eat three times a day." Each morning she asked that her wheelchair be rolled to her back door so she could "look at my crops."

Memorial services for Mrs. Romane were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Salley, pastor, officiating. Assisting was the Rev. Ernest Stewart, pastor of First Baptist Church.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of King Funeral Home.

Survivors include one son, Dr. W.M. (Bill) Romane of Bryan; two daughters, Mrs. Sue Dorn and Mrs. Linnie Hardesty, both of Crosbyton; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Mrs. Romane was preceded in death by her husband W.M. Romane, who succumbed in 1942, and two daughters, Lema, who died in infancy, and Fannie, who died in 1941.
