Biography

J.R.(Jim) and Nellie Madge Box were married in Hopkins County, Texas in 1900. Nellie taught school in Como, Texas while Jim farmed with his father. Their eldest daughter, Grace Elizabeth was born in 1905. In 1906 the family traveled by covered wagon "out west." They settled near Roswell, New Mexico where they lived in a half dugout. Jim drove freight wagons until he became ill and they returned to Texas. In 1907 the family came by railroad to Quanah, Texas, then by wagon to the Afton community. When the city of Spur came into being in 1909 the family moved to Spur, bought a business lot on East Harris Street and Nellie opened a Ladies shop. Jim was a farmer by nature so they returned to Afton in 1912 and farmed three miles northeast of the town in the community of Duncan Flat. Nellie taught school in Afton and she and Grace rode horseback to school. In 1916 the Robertson's bought land upon the plains. The first thing they did was build a barn and put up a windmill. They moved and lived in the barn until their house could be built. Their second daughter was born that year. The year was 1917 and that was the year that the big snow storm hit. Snow was piled up to the eaves of the barn where they were still living. That year they bought their first automobile, a Buick with fabric curtains, wooden wheels and small tires. Grace, age twelve, drove for two years before her parents learned to drive. Jim broke out the pasture and farmed until his death in 1945. He was sixty-nine years old.

Nellie retired from farming and moved to Crosbyton where she lived until her death in 1974. The farm is owned and farmed by their heirs.

Grace Elizabeth married E.I. (Buck) Brownlow in 1922. They had one child, a daughter Doris Ruth. Grace lived most of her adult life in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Jimmie Nell moved to Fort Worth in 1942 and resided there until her death in 1981. She had two daughters, Paula Diane(Mrs. Ray Steves) and Jacqueline Ann Parris, who resides in Dallas.
