Obituary

Charlie W. Robertson, less than two years away from his 100th birthday, was claimed by death at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. Mr. Robertson had been in failing health for some time.

He had lived a varied life, ranging from semi-pro baseball player to farmer.

Memorial services were at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Christ with Loyd Hall, minister, and Rev. J.C. Lott, pastor of College Heights Baptist Church in Lubbock, officiating.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.

Born Sept. 28, 1882, in Addison, Tex., Mrs. Robertson was married Jan. 4, 1920 to Josie Lorene Powell in Haskell. Mrs. Robertson died Jan. 24, 1980 at the age of 82.

The couple observed their 60th anniversary prior to Mrs. Robertson´s death.

Charlie W. Robertson barbered in the Dallas area for 22 years and was a semi-professional baseball pitcher. The family moved in 1928 to the South Plains from Denton County and farmed for a number of years prior to moving to Crosbyton in 1945.

While managing the apartments above Lowrie Drug, the elderly couple was credited with heroism in possibly saving the lives of tenants during a fire. They alerted residents of other apartments before attempting to flee. They were rescued from their second story apartment by a volunteer fire department ladder truck.

Mr. Robertson was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by one son, Emory Robertson of Lubbock; four daughters, Mr. Roy Matthews of Sunray, Mrs. Fred Haney and Mrs. Tom Wheatley, both of Lubbock and Mrs. Gene (Faye)Johnson of Crosbyton; 11 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
