George Luther Pipkin, 78, died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. An early settler in Crosbyton, he had been in failing health for six months.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, in the First Methodist Church. Rev. Bill Kent, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. J.C. Arnold, Lubbock.
Son of W.B. and Martha Ann Pipkin, George was born in Nevada County, Arkansas, during 1884. The family moved to Wertham in 1893 and Motley county in 1898. George came to Crosbyton in 1913 where his brother was first pastor of the Methodist Church.
Pipkin married Nellie Neely here, September 5, 1917. He farmed until his retirement several years ago.
While still living in Motley county, Pipkin came up on the Plains during the early 1900´s searching for stray horses and enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Hank Smith at the Rock House. In 1915, he helped excavate the dirt for present courthouse basement.
Always active in the Methodist Church, Pipkin helped raise the money for first permanent Methodist sanctuary in Crosbyton - the "little brown church."
Survivors include his wife and one brother, Bush Pipkin, McAdoo.
Burial will be in Crosbyton cemetery. King Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
