United States Coast Guard Veteran World War II
The family of J.C. Pierce will celebrate 84 years of his life at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at Franklin-Bartley Chapel followed by a committal service at Crosbyton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight at Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home.
He died Tuesday, Sept. 13. J.C. was born to Julius Jewel and Carl C. Brantley Pierce in Blum April 13, 1921. He and his family moved to Crosbyton, where they began farming. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. J.C. served during World War II in Seattle, Wash. He was aboard the 27th Commodore Way "The Locks", patrolling the coast for nine months. As a Corral Dog, he was responsible for the horses that the Coast Guard used on shore patrol. Following his time spent serving the United States Coast Guard; he returned home and married Thelma Hughes. Their wedding was Nov. 18, 1955 in Clovis, N.M. The newlyweds settled in Lubbock, and he was employed as a mechanic at Lubbock Auto. During his career as a mechanic, he also worked for Pollard Ford and Gene Messer Ford. He retired from Reese Air Force Base, where he drove a shuttle bus that transported the pilots to and from their planes. He is a former member of the West Texas Raiders, the Lubbock Drifters, and the Lubbock Saddle Club. He was a member of Genesis Baptist Church and the Brotherhood.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Pierce of New Deal; his son, Jewel Pierce and his wife Brenda of New Deal; two grandchildren, Jandi Tyson and her husband Trent of Canyon, and Cade Pierce of New Deal; a great-grandson, Benjamin Tyson; three children from a previous marriage along with their families; and siblings, Donald Pierce and his wife Wyanza, Dick Pierce and his wife Marilyn, Lula Mae Johnson and her husband Olan, and Katie Davis and her husband Thomas. His deceased brothers' wives, Judy and Carlee, also survive him.

Thelma Ray Pierce, 82, of New Deal died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, in Lakeside Rehab and Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Franklin-Bartley Chapel, with Reverend Roger Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in the Crosbyton Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at Franklin-Bartley from 5:30 to 7 p.m. this evening.
Thelma was born March 31, 1927, in Silverton, Texas, to Benjamin Franklin and Bula (Loving) Hughes. She was raised in Flomot. She met and married J.C. Pierce on Nov. 18, 1955, in Clovis, N.M., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 2005. Thelma was a member of the Genesis Baptist Church. She had been a resident of New Deal since 1989.
She is survived by her son, Jewel Pierce and wife Brenda of New Deal; two grandchildren, Jandi Tyson and husband Trent of Canyon and Cade Pierce and wife Camille of Keller; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Tyson and Haddie Tyson; her sister, Jean Cooper of Matador; and her brother, Butch Hughes of Flomot.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Jon, Austin and Lon Hughes.
