Russell McCurdyRussell McCurdy, a former longtime Crosbyton bank executive and civic leader, was claimed by death early Sunday morning in the Baptist Memorial´s Geriatric Center in San Angelo following a lengthy illness. He was 77.

Memorial services were conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in the First United Methodist Church in Crosbyton with the Rev. Wilbur Gaede, retired Methodist minister from Andrews, and the Rev. Johnnie Williams, pastor of the church, officiating.

Interment followed in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of Adams Funeral Home.

Associated with Citizens National Bank for a total of 43 years and a former stockholder, Mr. McCurdy served the last 26 years of his active association with the bank as its executive vice president prior to his retirement in 1966.

McCurdy was cited for his lengthy tenure as a civic leader by being recognized as "Outstanding Citizen Through the Years" at the 1962 Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce Banquet. He had a long record of civic service.

He had been listed in "Who´s Who in the South and Southwest," had served on the Lamar Foundation Board, the Crosbyton Federal Land Bank Association board of directors, on the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce board, and was Crosby County Democratic chairman for a number of years.

A charter member of Crosbyton Lions Club, he also served as secretary-treasurer of Crosbyton Volunteer Fire Department, Savings Bond chairman during the war years, and was wartime ration board member.

Mr. McCurdy was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he filled the position of treasurer for seven years. He was an organizer of Crosbyton Clinic Hospital and was for 13 years treasurer of the Masonic Lodge #1020, where he was a member.

In addition, his activities included working on a long list of charity campaigns and causes.

Born Sept. 7, 1899 at Frisco, he attended business school in Dallas. The former Beulah Roesch and Russell McCurdy were married August 11, 1928 in Dallas. He moved to Crosbyton in 1917 from the Dallas area.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah, of Crosbyton; one son, Russell McCurdy Jr. of Austin; and one sister, Mrs. Pearle Phillips of Long Beach, Calif.

Services for Beulah McCurdy, 99, of Crosbyton was at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at the Crosbyton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Harrington and Rev. Allen Brooks officiating. Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton. She passed away Saturday, March 4, 2006 at the Crosbyton Hospital.

Beulah was born on October 18, 1906 in Houston to the late Gustaf and Ora (Hardy) Roesch. On August 11, 1928 she married William Russell McCurdy in Dallas. He passed away on December 12, 1976.

She moved from Houston to Crosbyyton in the 1920's and shortly thereafter began teaching at Crosbyton schools. She was a member of the Crosbyton First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Beulah also served as a board member of the Pioneer Memorial Museum for many years.

She is preceded in death by a son; William Russell McCurdy, Jr. on Sept. 8, 1985, a brother and sister who died at birth, and three other sisters; Margaret Baker, Carrie Hepler and Ida Mae Townsend.

Survivors include a nephew and his wife; Carroll and Linda Townsend of Pearl River, LA, three nieces; Pauline Yarborough of Idalou, Vera Knight of Bryan and Lavoyce McCurdy of Corsicana.

Serving as pallbearers will be; Bob Adams, George Brakebill, George McNeill, Kenneth Witt, Jacky Dewbre and Reed Snodgrass. Honorary pallbearers will be; J. W. Jackson, Dee Cash, Nathan Boardman, Joe Heflin, Charlie Wheeler, Si Swindall, Larry Yowell, Dwayne Cornelius, Van Horn and G. J. "Buzz" Parkhill.
