Biography

Lou Allie Williams was born the 19th of March 1901 in Hill County, Texas. Her father was Lewis Williams and her mother was Sarah Ollie Myers. Her mother Sarah remarried to John P. Wallace on the 4th of October 1903. Lou started using the name Wallace for the most part but still used Williams on legal documents.

Lou married Fred Allen Zinn on 21st July 1916 at age 15. Fred was born the 24th March 1897 in Hill County. Lou and Fred had one son Fred Leland Zinn born 20th Sept. 1917 when Lou was 16. Fred registered for WWI in 1918 listing Lou as his wife and sometime after was struck by lightning and killed. Lou was a widow at age 17 with a young baby to raise alone.

Lou went to New York to try and make a living for herself and the baby. She dreamed of being on Broadway. Lou remarried sometime in the 1920's but the name of her spouse is unknown.

Lou marries her third husband Oscar Jones born in 1901. Oscar Jones was not kind to Fred Leland which presented many problems during his lifetime. Oscar and Lou moved back to Crosby County sometime around 1935; we find Lou and Oscar on the 1940 census in Crosby County, he is a contractor.

Lou marries a fourth time to I.E. Vandiver Martin. Van Martin was a very kind and wonderful man and good to Lou's grandchildren. Lou and Van moved back to Crosbyton when he became ill with dementia and his daughter took him to live with her.

Lou's only child Fred Leland married Lou Ella Talley and they had a son named Leland Lamar born 16th July 1939 in Crosby County. They moved to Artesia where they are found on the 1940 census where another son Vance was born. Leland would scrounge for food even in trash cans to keep Vance alive. Fred Leland served in the Navy at Pearl Harbor and lost his hearing while there. It is believed that Lou and Fred were separated or divorced as he was in Hawaii and got leave when their son Leland Lamar passed away March 12, 1943 of malnutrition in Lubbock, Texas at age 3.

In January 1957 Fred Leland marries Zella Mae Williams and they have 4 children: Ruth, David, Cynthia and Billy. Fred died in 2003 and is buried in Truth or Consequences, NM.

I.E. Vandiver Martin died 1982 in Silverton, Broscoe, Texas.

Information provided by Lou's grandchildren: Vance, Ruth, David, Cindy and Billy.
