Biography

Evelyn (Smith) Lowrie was born March 13, 1907, at Mt. Blanco, Texas. Her parents are the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Smith and she is the grand-daughter of Uncle and Aunt Hank Smith, the first settlers anywhere in the South Plains. They settled at the Rock House in Blanco Canyon in 1876.

Evelyn attended school at Big Four, Mt. Blanco and Crosbyton. She graduated from Crosbyton High School in 1924. She attended college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; West Texas State University at Canyon, Texas; and Texas Technological University, at Lubbock, Texas. She received her Bachelors degree from Hardin Simmons, her Master degree from Texas Technological University and has done some work on her Doctors degree at Texas Tech.

Her teaching career began at Blanco, Texas, where she taught the first two years of her teaching; one year at Pansy, Texas, and four years in Wellington High School. Mrs. Lowrie has taught thirty five years in the Crosbyton Schools. She was presented a service pin this year at an Assembly Program for those thirty five years. Mr. Sam Hawkes, superintendent of Crosbyton Schools presented the pin and Mrs. Lowrie was given a standing ovation by the student body and other teachers. Mrs. Lowrie has taught every grade from 1st through the 12th, and she has taught almost every subject.

Evelyn belongs to many professional and service organizations. She is a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, the National Educational Association, the Crosby County Teachers Association, she is a life member of the National Parent Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honorary organization for women teachers. She is a member of Order of Eastern Star, the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce, the Harmony Club of Crosbyton and is a member of the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Board. She is chairman of the State Historical Survey Committee of Crosby County. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Crosbyton. She is presently serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the West Texas Pioneers and Old Settlers Association.

Besides the service pins that Mrs. Lowrie has received there are many other honors. She has not only received the 35 year service pin, but the 15 year service pin, the 20 year service pin, the 25 year service pin and the 30 year service pin, all from Crosbyton Schools. She received a Silver Platter from Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce for outstanding work in the community; several certificates for commendation from State Historical Survey Committee for work done for the preservation of Historical sites and records. She received a grant from the National Service Foundation to attend an Institute for the teaching of modern mathematics in high school. This Institute was held at Texas Tech. Mrs. Lowrie is listed in Who´s Who In American Education and Who´s Who of American Women in America and Canada.

Evelyn has several hobbies some of which are fishing, raising game birds and playing the electric organ.

She is presently teaching Algebra II; Plane, Solid, and Coordinate Geometry; Trigonometry, and Elementary Analysis. She lives at Mt. Blanco with her nephew, Hank Smith III and in the home of her late parents Mr. and Mrs. George W. Smith. This home is marked by a State Historical Marker.

Mrs. Evelyn Smith Lowrie, Crosbyton High mathematics instructor, has been selected for inclusion in the next edition of "Who´s Who of Women in American Women of Canada".

Her selection was by the editorial board of Marquis-Who´s Who, Inc.

Mrs. Lowrie was selected last year for inclusion in "Who´s Who in American Education".
