Vera Ida Jones, a Crosby County resident for almost half a century, was claimed by death at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo, She was 81.The widely known Crosbytonite suffered a broken hip July 24 in a fall at her home, 222 South Emerald. She underwent surgery at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock and was believed to have been recuperating satisfactorily.
This Monday, Mrs. Jones was transferred to Bivens Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo. Death was attributed to a blood clot, according to a friend.
Funeral arrangements were pending at press time with Adams Funeral Home in Crosbyton.
Mrs. Jones had been active in all phases of First Baptist Church through the years, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, was past matron and a member of the Past Matron Club and held membership in the Garden Club.
Vera Ida Johnston was born July 12, 1903, in Foard County. She and Garnet B. Jones were married Feb. 14, 1926, in Crowell. She formerly was a telephone operator in Crowell and a bookkeeper in Quanah.
The family moved Jan. 1, 1937, to Crosby County and farmed near Ralls until 1941, when they purchased farms in Mt. Blanco and Big Four communities and moved to Mt. Blanco.
They moved into Crosbyton in January 1947. Garnet Jones preceded his wife in death Jan. 5, 1975.
Mrs. Jones is survived by one son, Billy Wayne Jones of Canyon; one sister; one grandson; two granddaughters; and several great grandchildren.
