One of Crosbyton´s best known residents and a longtime civic leader, Garnet Wayne Jones, succumbed about 4:30 a.m. Sunday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. Mr. Jones had been a patient in the local hospital since the previous Tuesday morning.

He had undergone minor surgery in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo after becoming ill while he and Mrs. Jones were spending the Christmas holidays with their son, Billy Wayne Jones and family in Canyon.

However, the 73 year old Crosbytonite was dismissed and returned home Monday of last week. He became ill the following morning and was admitted to Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.

Memorial rites were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Crosbyton by the Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, and the Rev. Stanley Nixon, pastor of Pansy Baptist Church.

Masonic graveside services preceded interment in Crosbyton Cemetery. King Funeral Home directed arrangements.

Born Feb. 3, 1901 in Denton County to Brown and Lillian Jones, Garnet Wayne Jones was married to the former Vera Johnston on Feb. 14, 1925 in Crowell.

The couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary next month.

A mail carrier in Quanah, he worked for eight years at Foxworth-Galbreath Lumber Co. there.

In 1937 the Jones family moved to Crosby County, settling on a farm on the East Plains in 1941. They moved in 1947 to Crosbyton.

A deacon of First Baptist Church for many years, Mr. Jones was a past president of Crosbyton Lions Club, was a president of Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce, was a member of Crosbyton Masonic Lodge No. 1020, served as a past Worthy Patron of Crosbyton Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of Lubbock Commandery No. 60, K. T. Hugh J. McClellan Chapter No. 248.

Jones was selected as "Citizen Through the Years" in 1967.

Founder of the Garnet Jones Insurance Agency, he also was a former realtor. Mr. Jones had served on the Salvation Army board for 30 years.

He was a staunch supporter of Boys Ranch near Amarillo.
