Joseph Johnston III photoJoseph Eggleston Johnston III, 82, of Crosbyton went to be with his Lord on January 9, 2015 at the Crosbyton Nursing Home. Joseph was born on January 29, 1932 in Crosbyton, Texas to Joe E. Johnston II and Viola (Robertson) Johnston. He graduated from Crosbyton High School in 1949 and went on to attend Abilene Christian College, studying to become a preacher of the gospel. He later transferred to Freed Hardeman Christian College in Henderson, Tennessee. In later years he also attended Texas Tech. While attending Freed Hardeman he met and married Zane Alice Lawson of Yazoo City, Mississippi. They were married on September 22, 1953 at the Yazoo City Church of Christ. Throughout the years Joseph preached the gospel in Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. When he returned to Crosbyton he owned and managed the Silver Falls Motel, the Kwik-Way Laundry/Car Wash, and the Johnston Texaco Station. In 1970, Joseph began the White River Lake Church of Christ, where he served as the minister. Then in 1971, he started White River Youth Camp where he served as assistant director and camp manager for 24 years. The camp was one of his greatest joys and he loved being out there sharing the Lords word and entertaining the kids with his stories and skits. He retired from the camp work in 1994.

He also owned and operated the Johnston Auto Shop, and was active in the Lion's Club where he had served as president. He was an instructor in the AARP Defensive Driver Safety Course and had served as president of the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce and the Crosby County Senior Citizen Association. He also served as mayor of Crosbyton from 2000 to 2004.

He loved preaching the word of God, performing in skits for the Lions Club and in the prairie drama Gods Country, and tinkering with cars. His sense of humor will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Zane Alice of the home; his son, Joseph (Joey) Johnston of Idalou, Texas; his daughter, Carolyn Rehmel and her husband Tim of Enid, Oklahoma; 3 grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and Luke; his brother, Ramon Johnston, of Crosbyton; and his sister, Julia Montgomery, of Crosbyton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Crosbyton Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the care of Adams Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to White River Youth Camp.
