Bessie Howard

Crosbtyon lost another of her longtime residents when Mrs. O.W. (Bessie Lee) Howard succumbed about 9 p.m. Tuesday of last week in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Howard was 73.

She had been a resident of this community for 42 years.

Memorial services were conducted a 4 p.m. last Thursday, March 23, in the Crosbyton Church of Christ. Bill Bryant, a Lubbock minister, and Joseph Johnston Jr., minister of White River Church of Christ, officiated.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of Adams Funeral Home.

The former Bessie Lee Burgess was born Dec. 18, 1904 in Comanche, Tex. She and O. W. Howard were married Nov. 17, 1923 and the couple moved to Crosbyton from Childress on Jan. 2, 1936.

A housewife, Mrs. Howard was an active member of the Church of Christ and Crosbyton Senior Citizens.

In addition to her husband, O.W. Howard, survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Fay Stephens of Dallas, Mrs. Betty Lowe of San Antonio, and Mrs. Wanda L. Simpson of Lubbock; two brothers, Chester Burgess of Taylor and J.B. Burgess of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four sisters, Mrs. Alta Skaggs of Lindsey, Okla., Mrs. Frances Nymeyer of Dilley, Mrs. Ruth Monk of Carlsbad, NM, and Mrs. Odessa Huber of Ruidoso, NM, five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
