Jay Hinson

Rose Spray
An era died Thursday morning with the 6:45 a.m. death of Jay Hinson. Mr. Hinson, 74, was an integral part of the old West.

He succumbed in Crosbyton Hospital after an extended illness.

Boot and saddle maker, the well-known Hinson was a familiar figure at rodeos here in years passed. He and his chuck wagon were seen at numerous events, including the Masonic Hilltop annual observance and in parades. He was a ranch cook in his younger years.

Mr. Hinson "had a way with youngsters."

A native of Coryell County, he moved to Crosbyton in 1942 and operated his harness-boot-saddle shop until his retirement.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral rites were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church here with the Rev. Vernon O´Kelly, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Ralls, officiating. The Rev. Ernest Stewart, local Baptist pastor, officiated.

Masonic graveside rites were conducted at Crosbyton Cemetery. King Funeral Home directed arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Dicie; a daughter, Mrs. Bill Autry of Ralls; three sisters, Mrs. Zelma McNiel of Waco, Mrs. O.B. McNiel of Rockdale and Mrs. Ceil Wills of Weslaco; and three grandchildren.
