Billy Ray Hicks of Crosbyton also known as Whitrock, Coach Hicks, and Papa passed away Saturday morning, March 29, at Covenant Palliative Care Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born in a cotton patch near Jerrell, Texas to Hubert Franklin and Ima Lee Hicks. They moved to Seminole when he was four. He served in the US Marine Corps for four years as a demolition expert during the Korean War. When he returned from service, he met Linda Nell Starrett at the Dairy Queen in Seminole, Texas. Bill and Linda have been happily married for 56 years. Bill and Linda graduated from Sul Ross University and then began their lives together in Lubbock, Texas. Bill was a football coach for 33 years until he retired in 1990 and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of his students. He received numerous coaching awards for his contributions to high school football. He continued serving students after his retirement as an elementary PE teacher, substitute teacher, juvenile probation officer and served as a city council member in Crosbyton. Bill was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Crosbyton, Lions Club, High Plains Airstream Travel club, and was a member of the Seminole and Crosbyton Masonic Lodges.
Bill is survived by his wife and four children: Peter and Belle Hicks of Odessa Texas, Jimmy and Micki Hicks of Pampa Texas, Burl and Misty Hicks of Wolfforth Texas, and Samuel Hicks of Austin Texas.
In Lieu of flowers the family is asking donations be made out to Crosbyton United Methodist Church or Crosbyton Senior Citizens Center.
Services for Bill will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church of Crosbyton, burial will follow in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton. A visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.
